Chapter One - Open your eyes. What can you see?
Carry a notepad and pen with you at all times and use it to write about what's around you - words, illustrations, sentences
Every pair of eyes is tuned to an original way of seeing. Each pair of ears hears different things. The things you might write in your notepad are -
- the colour of cars
- description of faces on the train
- snatches of conversations
- abandoned furniture
- LED displays
- The beeps of mobile phones
Don't let some elevated idea of what creativity might be dissuade you from recording what you see every day.
Allow yourself to develop a practice of just looking.
We think that only geniuses can have good, exciting ideas. I believe there is no genius. There is no lightning flash.
Instead, creativity is the constellation of many forces - preparation, attention to detail, persistence and self awareness.
Your creative life is not far off, distant. It's not taking place in Tel Aviv or Berlin.
It's where you are.
Start staying 'I'm here, I'm ready to be a creative person' Many times, just acknowledging it can be the first step on building a new creative life. Speak it out loud. See what happens when you hear the words coming out of your own mouth.
If you encourage self-reflection in yourself an open dialogue with the world around you, creativity will support you on your ongoing journey.
